Heather Small, born 20th January 1965, grew up on a West London council estate. From going to Sunday school and attending the 'Good News Club', religion and faith became an important aspect of Heather's life. Growing up in 70's Britain and not wanting to be stereotyped or treated differently, Heather knew that she wanted to make something of herself.

Even though Heather battled with shyness and severe nerves, she joined her first band Hot!House who released two albums in the late 80's.

As Part of M People, hits such as 'Moving On Up', 'One Night In Heaven' and 'Search For The Hero' and albums like Elegant Slumming, Bizarre Fruit and Fresco achieving massive worldwide success, Heather became one of the seminal British voices of the 1990s, with the band winning the Best British Dance Act Award at the Brits in 1994 and 1995, as well as the Mercury Music Prize for Elegant Slumming.

Heather has since had great successes with two solo albums – the title track of her 'Proud' album has gone on to become the soundtrack to a whole host of very special events including London's successful 2012 Olympic bid, the 60th anniversary of VE Day in Trafalgar Square, the launch of Queen Mary 2, the Tsunami Relief Concert, England's victory at the Rugby World Cup celebrations, and the official ceremony marking the handover of the Olympic Games from Beijing to London.

And when Oprah Winfrey was looking for a song to sum up the work she'd been striving to achieve over her twenty-year career, she got in touch with Heather, who somehow managed to squeeze in a trip across the Atlantic to perform on the show right in the middle of her last UK tour with M People ('If Oprah calls, you go!' she laughs, adding that the first lady of chat was 'very sweet to me').

In 2008, Heather embarked on a journey that would see her dance her way into the public’s affection as she became a contestant in Series 6 of the BBC's 'Strictly Come Dancing'. Heather's infectious personality and her trademark sense of humour earned her appearances on a number of TV news and chat shows including Paul O'Grady, Alan Titchmarsh, GMTV, BBC Breakfast, The Wright Stuff, Newsnight, as well as special appearances on The Weakest Link and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

2009 was another busy year for Heather as she took to the road again with her band completing two highly successful UK tours in May and November, performing at over 30 venues nationwide to sell-out crowds. She also continued her TV work with regular slots on music, entertainment, and politics shows, including 'Dancing On Wheels', a wheelchair dancing competition-come-documentary airing on BBC Three in early 2010.

In the Autumn, Heather teamed up with singing sensations Anastacia and Lulu for the critically acclaimed 'Here Come The Girls' – an unforgettable night of feel-good party music and dance, touring arenas across the UK and Ireland during November and December 2010.

Well known for her charitable work, Heather was recently made an ambassador for the children’s charity Barnardo's and is continually involved with fundraising and helping lend her valuable support to projects around the country.

So what gives Heather the impetus to keep moving forward, to keep challenging herself, to keep trying new things and not resting on her laurels? 'If you got the feeling I do when I sing' she smiles, 'you'd understand'.

Ed Byrne: Bridlington Spa Friday 27th April 2018

One night show celebrates 60th anniversary of Buddy’s 1958 appearance at Hull’s Regal Cinema. The 60th anniversary of Buddy Holly’s performance at Hull’s Regal Cinema as part of his only UK national tour will be celebrated with a one night show at Hull City Hall.

In 1958, Buddy Holly and The Crickets played 25 venues across England back to back from March 1, playing two or even three shows a night. The American singing sensation headlined a variety bill hosted by comedian Des O’Connor, including the date at the Regal Cinema in Hull. To celebrate this diamond anniversary, the UK’s first and best-loved Buddy Holly act, Buddy Holly and The Cricketers, is revisiting some of the same venues on the same dates with a very special show backed by The English Rock and Roll Orchestra.

With the Regal Cinema no longer in existence, the show will take place at the historic Hull City Hall on March 19 – the same date of Buddy’s performance at the cinema 60 years earlier. Buddy Holly and The Cricketers has delighted audiences across the globe for the past 25 years.

The show stars some of the finest actor-musicians in the UK and was endorsed as Britain’s most popular Buddy Holly act when the boys guested on BBC One's Saturday night live programme, The One and Only, hosted by Graham Norton.

The English Rock and Roll Orchestra has assembled some of the finest classical musicians in the country, many of whom are multi-instrumentalists. They relish the opportunity to depart from their usual repertoire and indulge in their love of rock ’n’ roll.

Buddy Holly and The Cricketers present Buddy in the style of show they feel he would perform today – with authentic arrangements, driving rhythms, energetic performances and wonderful musicianship, all delivered with charm and humour.

Jools Holland at Hull City Hall on Sunday 1st July 2018

Musician and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra at venue in July. Jools Holland & his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra will return to Hull City Hall in 2018 following a sold-out concert this year.

At the age of eight, Jools could play the piano fluently by ear and by age of 15 he had formed Squeeze with Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford.Shorly afterwards they were joined by Gilson Lavis, who had already played with, among others, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, and Max Wall, and who still drums with Jools.

Up The Junction and Cool For Cats gave Squeeze incredible success and their popularity rapidly extended to America, where their tour included performances at New York's Madison Square Garden. In 1987, Jools formed The Jools Holland Big Band – comprising himself and Gilson Lavis. This has gradually metamorphosed into the current 19-piece Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, which consists of pianist, organist, drummer, three female vocals, guitar, bass guitar, two tenor saxophones, two alto saxophones, baritone saxophone, three trumpets, and three trombones.

Jools's career as a television presenter has run parallel to his musical career. He started in the early 1980s when he interviewed The Police for a documentary that was made while they were recording at George Martin's Montserrat studio. Jools then auditioned to become co-presenter (with Paula Yates) of The Tube, which achieved almost immediate cult status and discovered a whole new generation of musicians and comedians between 1981 and 1986. After presenting two series of Juke Box Jury in 1989 and then 26 shows of The Happening in 1990, Jools was asked in 1992 to host a new music programme for BBC Two, which combined his talent and experience as a musician with his skills as a TV presenter. This was Later... with Jools Holland. The show has reawakened the innovative spirit of The Tube and is this year celebrating 25 years, 50 series and more than 360 episodes of broadcast on BBC Two. As always, Jools continues to dazzle audiences across the UK with his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra and their exuberant live performances.

Tickets for Jools Holland & his Rhythm and Blues at Hull City Hall on Sunday, July 1 2018 are from £36 plus £1.50 per ticket booking fee. Book at the Hull City Hall box office or call 01482 300 306. Visit  website www.hulltheatres.co.uk to book online

Gary Numan: Savage Singer will bring UK tour to Hull City Hall on  Tuesday 20th March 2018

It follows the release of his album ‘Savage: Songs From A Broken World’ earlier this year through BMG which earned the best reviews of Gary’s career. He entered the UK charts at No.2, a fantastic achievement for the iconic and highly influential star. The British electro pioneer was also awarded the Inspiration Award for songwriting and composition at the Ivor Novello Awards this year.

‘Savage: Songs From A Broken World’ is an album with a narrative that’s set in an apocalyptic, post-global warming Earth in the not-too-distant future. There is no technology left and most of the planet has turned to a desolate desert wasteland. Food is scarce, water even more so and human kindness and decency are just a dim and distant memory. Western and Eastern cultures have merged, more because of the need to simply survive than any feelings of greater tolerance or understanding. It’s a harsh, savage environment, as are the survivors who still roam across it.

While Numan was writing the record, Donald Trump was elected President of the United States. It made sense to make him and his climate decisions the catalyst for the apocalypse theme of the album. “The songs are about the things that people do in such a harsh and terrifying environment,” said Numan.

It was a strategy that brought Numan closer to his fans, and allowed him to communicate the blood, sweat and tears that goes into making a record. The campaign grew so successful that Numan consequently secured a record deal with BMG.

‘Savage: Songs From A Broken World’ is out now on CD, deluxe CD, double vinyl, cassette, digital and MFiT formats.

Tickets for Gary Numan: Savage at Hull City Hall on Tuesday, March 20 2018 are from £29.50 plus £1.50 per ticket booking fee. 1 Book online at www.hulltheatres.co.uk or call 01482 300 306. Book in person at the Hull City Hall box office.

January 2018, and a busy day at the offices of Hull 2017. Today is the ceremonial handover to ambassadors from the next UK City of Culture. Meanwhile, the monitoring and evaluation team have to present The Audit – a measurement of the impact ‘the culture’ has had on the city. Can their logic models, outcome evaluations and statistical analyses really measure its impact on the people of Hull? The visiting Minister from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport certainly expect so. What could go wrong?

Only, perhaps, Dennis, an average citizen who arrives into the offices of Hull 2017 to register a complaint but accidentally finds himself at the centre of events that could bring the whole thing to its knees.

The Culture is a satirical farce in two acts, examining the 'culture' of culture, and the inner workings of the Hull 2017 project.

Writer James Graham (writer of Ink and Labour of Love which ran concurrently in the West End in 2017; This House nominated for the Olivier Best play award; and The Vote, nominated for a BAFTA) was granted behind the scenes access to the running of the year-long festival.

Runs from 26 January until 17 February 2018.

To enter just answer this question - How many plays has writer James Graham had on in the West End this year?

Tickets from £10 - £22.50 and must be booked in advance by calling the box office on 01482 323638 or booking online at  www.hulltruck.co.uk

WAYNE HUSSEY ‘Aniversario Tour’ comes to SHEFFIELD – Foundry on Tuesday 1st May 2018

Wayne Hussey, The Mission’s frontman heads out on a world tour this Spring and plays the in Sheffield at the Foundry on Tuesday 1st May.

Wayne Hussey is taking a break from his day job as leader of the British rock band, The Mission, to go out and play a double fistful of solo shows in late spring 2018. The tour is entitled ‘Aniversário Tour’. The Portuguese word, aniversário translates as birthday and these shows are a way for Wayne to celebrate his upcoming 60th. In fact the final show of the tour on Saturday 26th May, his birthday, will be in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the city where Wayne has resided for the last 17 years.

Bristol born & bred, and a passionate Liverpool FC supporter, Wayne Hussey, lauded by some as maverick legend and others as dissolute charlatan, has been making music since the day he was first inspired to pick up a guitar after watching Marc Bolan & T-Rex on Top of the Pops. A long and excessive and sometimes downright scandalous road has led Wayne to where he is today. One thing is certain about Wayne, he's certainly a divisive character.

The Mission went on to considerable global success in the late 80s and early 90s, enjoying album sales in excess of four million worldwide with notable works such as ‘God’s Own Medicine’ and ‘Carved In Sand’ amongst others and enjoying an unbroken run of 14 UK Top 40 singles!  They forged a reputation that still stands today as one of the best ‘live’ bands in the world, thanks in no small part to the charisma & energy that Hussey exudes & exerts on stage.

2018 sees Wayne playing a double fistful of shows, entitled The Aniversário Tour, in Sweden, the UK, Argentina, Chile, and finally ending in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where Wayne has resided for the last 15 years, on May 26th - Wayne’s celebrates his 60th birthday. Wayne has a beautiful Brazilian wife of 17 years, 5 dogs, 3 cats, and is a vegetarian.
