Jools Holland at Hull City Hall on Sunday 1st July 2018
Musician and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra at venue in July. Jools Holland & his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra will return to Hull City Hall in 2018 following a sold-out concert this year.
At the age of eight, Jools could play the piano fluently by ear and by age of 15 he had formed Squeeze with Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford.Shorly afterwards they were joined by Gilson Lavis, who had already played with, among others, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, and Max Wall, and who still drums with Jools.
Up The Junction and Cool For Cats gave Squeeze incredible success and their popularity rapidly extended to America, where their tour included performances at New York's Madison Square Garden. In 1987, Jools formed The Jools Holland Big Band – comprising himself and Gilson Lavis. This has gradually metamorphosed into the current 19-piece Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, which consists of pianist, organist, drummer, three female vocals, guitar, bass guitar, two tenor saxophones, two alto saxophones, baritone saxophone, three trumpets, and three trombones.
Jools's career as a television presenter has run parallel to his musical career. He started in the early 1980s when he interviewed The Police for a documentary that was made while they were recording at George Martin's Montserrat studio. Jools then auditioned to become co-presenter (with Paula Yates) of The Tube, which achieved almost immediate cult status and discovered a whole new generation of musicians and comedians between 1981 and 1986. After presenting two series of Juke Box Jury in 1989 and then 26 shows of The Happening in 1990, Jools was asked in 1992 to host a new music programme for BBC Two, which combined his talent and experience as a musician with his skills as a TV presenter. This was Later... with Jools Holland. The show has reawakened the innovative spirit of The Tube and is this year celebrating 25 years, 50 series and more than 360 episodes of broadcast on BBC Two. As always, Jools continues to dazzle audiences across the UK with his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra and their exuberant live performances.

WAYNE HUSSEY ‘Aniversario Tour’ comes to SHEFFIELD – Foundry on Tuesday 1st May 2018
Wayne Hussey, The Mission’s frontman heads out on a world tour this Spring and plays the in Sheffield at the Foundry on Tuesday 1st May.
Wayne Hussey is taking a break from his day job as leader of the British rock band, The Mission, to go out and play a double fistful of solo shows in late spring 2018. The tour is entitled ‘Aniversário Tour’. The Portuguese word, aniversário translates as birthday and these shows are a way for Wayne to celebrate his upcoming 60th. In fact the final show of the tour on Saturday 26th May, his birthday, will be in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the city where Wayne has resided for the last 17 years.
Bristol born & bred, and a passionate Liverpool FC supporter, Wayne Hussey, lauded by some as maverick legend and others as dissolute charlatan, has been making music since the day he was first inspired to pick up a guitar after watching Marc Bolan & T-Rex on Top of the Pops. A long and excessive and sometimes downright scandalous road has led Wayne to where he is today. One thing is certain about Wayne, he's certainly a divisive character.
The Mission went on to considerable global success in the late 80s and early 90s, enjoying album sales in excess of four million worldwide with notable works such as ‘God’s Own Medicine’ and ‘Carved In Sand’ amongst others and enjoying an unbroken run of 14 UK Top 40 singles! They forged a reputation that still stands today as one of the best ‘live’ bands in the world, thanks in no small part to the charisma & energy that Hussey exudes & exerts on stage.
2018 sees Wayne playing a double fistful of shows, entitled The Aniversário Tour, in Sweden, the UK, Argentina, Chile, and finally ending in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where Wayne has resided for the last 15 years, on May 26th - Wayne’s celebrates his 60th birthday. The Man Who Comes To Hull Scottish Rock Band Travis perform their hugely successful album live.
Glaswegian 90s musicians Travis are set to rock Hull City Hall this December as they perform their multi-platinum selling album The Man Who, live.
Released 19 years ago, the album sounds as fresh today as it did then. One of the most successful British albums of the last 20 years, it spawned the timeless singles, Writing To Reach You, Driftwood, Turn and possibly the band’s most iconic song, Why Does It Always Rain On Me.
Singer/ guitarist Fran Healy said; “songs are like emotional bookmarks in time. When you hear a song you are transported to those times and feel strong echoes of the feelings you felt. Rarely does an album have this ability so performing The Man Who once again will be a joy!”
Produced by Nigel Godrich, The Man Who spent an astonishing 11 weeks at Number 1, selling nearly 3 million copies. It was the biggest selling UK album in 2000, propelled by an incendiary Glastonbury performance in the rain! Recognition quickly followed including Ivor Novello Awards for Best Songwriter and Best Contemporary Song for Why Does It Always Rain On Me? and BRIT Awards for Best British Band and Best British Album.

THE LEVELLERS play HULL – Zebedee’s Yard on Saturday 28th July 2018
LEVELLERS - From their early gigs in Brighton in the spring of 1988 — in venues such as The Richmond and The Zap — Levellers were a ‘gang band’ that attracted an instant following. Then as now, just like their heroes The Clash, they represented a potent brew of activism and hedonism. Their music appealed to the head, the heart and the feet in equal measure. The self-styled ghetto kings of downside town, Levellers never looked back. And on and on the river flowed.
Over the years Levellers have worn many masks; most self-made, some imposed upon them. Pastoral folk-punks, posterboys for the underdogs, Top of the Pops-bothering pop stars. But while their status has evolved over the decades, the basic humanity underpinning their music has remained constant. Often political, occasionally angry but always big-hearted, their songs became instant anthems. Over their career as a whole, they’ve had 11 Top 40 albums, including a number one with 1995’s Zeitgeist, and 14 Top 40 singles. Their landmark 1991 album, Levelling The Land, spent 38 weeks in the Top 100 album charts over a three year period.
The Levellers decided they wanted to do something a bit different with their back catalogue to kick off celebrations for their 30th anniversary year in 2018. They brought in a string section and enlisted legendary producer John Leckie (Radiohead, The Stone Roses) to help develop new acoustic arrangements for eight of their previous singles including Liberty, Hope Street and One Way which they recorded straight to tape at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios. They also recorded two brand new songs and the result is 10 track album ‘We The Collective’ which was released on 30 March 2018 on the band’s own On The Fiddle Recordings label. The band hit Number 12 in the UK Official Album Charts and Number 1 in the UK Independent Album Charts on release.
Levellers played the new arrangements at the Roundhouse in London as part of the In The Round festival and will tour the Acoustic show to a number of theatres and concert halls around the country in July.
Later in the Summer, they will be playing their full electric show at a few key venues and festivals before they head out to Europe to start their 30 YEARS – ONE WAY OF LIFE tour.

An evening with The Wombats this summer at Hull – Zebedee’s Yard on Sunday 26th August
THE WOMBATS - ‘Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life’ Album Biography
Wombats fans. Thousands of ‘em. The Reading & Leeds promoter checking his onsite heat-tracking app was stunned to discover hordes of fans descending en masse on the Festival Republic Stage set like an alien swarm, one of the biggest stage-rushes of the 2015 festival. Two months later the band stepped onstage to headline Alexandra Palace for the first time, kicking off the most euphoric pop party of the year. Somewhere between those two moments, the UK went Wombats crazy. Again.
Their 2011 second album ‘This Modern Glitch’ hit Number Three in the UK on the back of “flawless” (BBC) and “triumphant” (Daily Mirror) tunes such as ‘Techno Fan’, ‘Tokyo (Vampires And Wolves)’, ‘Jump Into The Fog’ and ‘Anti-D’, Murph’s brave, confessional epic about his addiction to antidepressants. And by the time their more synth-pop third album ‘Glitterbug’ was sent Top Five in the UK by a whole new generation of Wombats fans and had gone gold in Australia, they’d proved themselves amongst the most enduring bands of the noughties indie rock generation and one of the UK’s biggest and best guitar pop sensations.
Tickets for The Wombats – Hull show taking place on Sunday 26th August are available from: HULL – Zebedee’s Yard Box Office No: 0844 249 1000 Website – http://www.vmstickets.co.uk/ Doors – 6.00pm Ticket price - £25.00
The Kings are Back! Playwright John Godber brings new play to Hull New Theatre 5-15th September 2018
Malcolm King returns to Hull New Theatre, in playwright John Godber’s hilarious sequel to last year’s record-breaking hit, The Kings of Hull.
Commissioned as part of Hull’s UK City of Culture celebrations, we first met the Kings family at Malcolm and Becky’s golden wedding anniversary as they reflect on the city’s past, from the 1960s through to Brexit and beyond. Now we rejoin them as Malc and his family embark on a P&O Ferries’ Dutch Dash, where they discover it’s not only the sea that gets rough. It could be Rotterdam or anywhere, but when you take the Kings out of Hull, the sparks still fly. Whoever said that family was dead?...
Honorary Hullensian John Godber made a name for himself, and a place in the local history books, after steering Hull Truck Theatre from the brink of bankruptcy in the 1980s to international success as its Artistic Director. Today, his unique writing style, packed with in-jokes and local references continue to shape truly memorable theatrical experiences. Long Live The Kings marks the continuation of the partnership between Hull New Theatre and the John Godber Company to produce bespoke work for the city’s audiences.
